Previous Projects

We're proud of our work at Fisher BSE and everything we do is completed to the highest standard. Below you will see some recent projects undertaken, the proudest being the mechanical and electrical installation at Smithers Laboratories in Harrogate.

Smithers Laboratories Harrogate

Tendered, Procured, Project Managed and Successfully Delivered

This project has been the most technically challenging to date; this was once an old dilapidated building which has now been converted into a fully operational scientific testing laboratory.

Our HVAC scope of works for this project consisted of supplying, installing, commissioning and full coordination of the following systems: -

  • 1no. Centralised roof mounted Nuaire AHU c/w pre-heat and heating coils and associated controls.
  • 1no. Carrier Chiller c/w buffer vessel with associated chilled water distribution
  • 8no. fume cupboard extract systems with roof mounted fans (UPVC ducting)
  • Multiple Invert gas networks to serve fume cupboards
  • 20no. Toshiba Heating and Cooling systems, consisting of Single Splits and VRF heat pump systems
  • Wall hung Gas fired commercial boilers c/w low loss header and shunt pumps serving both CT and VT circuits
  • Cold water storage tank with triple pump booster sets
  • HVAC Centralised Control System with emergency gas interlock and fire alarm interface
  • General Ventilation systems c/w trox VAV boxes
  • Domestic & Above Ground Drainage Services, including all sanitaryware installation
  • Installation of Thermal Insulation to HVAC services
  • Actionair Fire Smoke Dampers and Associated EMS Damper control panel

The coordination of the mechanical services on the roof of this building was a feat of mechanical engineering, as the positioning and coordinated of all roof services had to be finalised prior to the mechanical crane lift. This was to ensure all equipment was positioned and coordinated with the associated services below, so that all the M&E services below a meshed decking was accessible to the plant items they were serving to keep the mesh plant deck accessible for maintenance and access.

Imphal Barracks Project - York

Project Managed and Successfully delivered ahead of programme

The project comprised of the following two main areas of works throughout the army base: -

  • The refurbishment of the Army and Civil Servants two storey office quarters
  • The new build of the three Storey SLA block

New build of the three-storey SLA block

The single living accommodation block is a three-storey construction comprising of ensuite bedrooms for both Senior and Junior officers, with changing facilities, kitchen, laundry and drying facilities, with the main mechanical services plantroom located on the ground floor.

The mechanical services installation consists of the following:

Extract Ventilation Systems

A series of wall and ceiling mounted local extract fans were installed in the ensuites, cleaners, stores, drying rooms and communal WC’s. All ducted to the external wall complete with airbrick type vents to blend in with the external brick façade.

Air conditioning

Installation of Daikin single split system to serve a storeroom

Heating System (LTHW Gas Fired Boilers and Associated Equipment)

Installation of 2no. wall mounted gas fired condensing boilers within the Mechanical plantroom. The boilers feed a low loss header c/w 2no. shunt pumps. From the L/L header a secondary LTHW F&R pipework distribution system serves the buildings heating system which comprises of radiators and local lock shield and thermostatic regulating valves.

MCWS, Storage Tank and Booster set

A new MDPE mains cold water supply was installed into the new mechanical plantroom which was taken off the existing site wide mains network. From point of entry an isolation valve, double check valve and pulsed water meter was installed prior to serving the LTHW pressurisation unit and cold-water storage tank. The outgoing pipework from the storage tank is provided with an electronic scale inhibitor before supplying the conditioned water to the CWS booster set. This CWS booster set provided the cold water requirements for the entire building including the hot water storage cylinders.

Domestic Hot Water Plant & Distribution

Installation of 2no. gas fired condensing water storage cylinders within the Mechanical Plantroom. From the water heaters domestic water is circulated by a way of a main flow and return pipework distribution system incorporating a secondary return circulation pump, which circulates the hot water within the plantroom and throughout the SLA building.

Natural Gas Service

A new MDPE mains gas supply was installed into the new mechanical plantroom which was taken off the existing site wide mains network. The incoming pipework is furnished by the way of gas isolation and gas safety solenoid valve before separating to serve both the LTHW boilers and DHWS water cylinders.

BMS Controls

A fully integrated controls system was installed throughout the mechanical plantroom, to provide an emergency safety shut off to the gas systems, monitor meters for gas and water consumption, provide run and fault indications to pumps, boilers, water heaters as well monitoring the levels of the water storage tank and protecting the booster pump from running dry. All controls were linked back to a main HVAC panel located in the Mechanical plantroom.

Mechanical refurbishment of the Army and Civil Servants two storey office quarters

The existing office quarters refurbishment works consisted of an entire strip out of 2no. existing Mechanical Plantrooms located at the north and south of the building, along with the entire associated existing one pipe heating system which served the entire building from these two plantrooms.

Each plantroom was served by a district heating system which ultimately went back to one centralised plantroom located in the middle of the Imphal Barracks campus. We picked up the district heating F&R mains pipework connections and used these to feed a new packaged plate heat exchanger within each north and south plantroom making the district heating a primary heating circuit to the building.

We then installed a secondary heating circuit consisting of a low loss header from the PHX with multiple LTHW circuits and pumps, with a new efficient two pipe LTHW heating system complete with new double convector radiators throughout the entire building. We installed black malleable iron pipework and fittings, treated with red oxide and finished with thermal insulation c/w I.D. throughout the entire installation.

The new two pipe heating system was controlled via PICV, room thermostats and local TMV’s to all new radiators. These were all controlled centrally by a new Building Management System. Not only did this create a more comfortable environment for the army and civil servants but it also provided remarkable energy savings to the end user.

These works were delivered over the course of a 18month programme which consisted of 14 phases which slightly overlapped to ensure the entire building remained operational throughout the duration of refurbishment. Even the Army praised our efforts for such a fluid delivery of a technically complex project.

  • HVAC Centralised Control System

The complexity of this project came down to three main attributes: -

Coordination - 80% of the M&E services are on show; attention to detailed coordination between all services has been key to ensuring combined containment runs were kept to a minimum

Location – Seven Dials Market occupy the Basement and ground floor of Thomas Neals Warehouse, with the main HVAC plantroom located at roof level and 3 levels of offices spaces in-between. Throughout the project we have had to coordinate with the neighbouring offices to pass our M&E services through their office space to our roof top plantroom.

Spatial Constraints – When working in Covent Garden there’s no such thing as space, to overcome this specific HVAC plant had been specified to spatial fit in the minimal space we were allocated.

The finished result clearly demonstrates the level of communication and coordination throughout the design and site team.
